Climb Description
This route is one of five ways to climb to the astronomical observatories at Calar Alto, and it is one of the most enjoyable. Beginning from the picturesque village of Serón, it follows the old road through the largely deserted village of Las Menas. This first part of the climb is incredibly scenic, as the narrow road winds through pleasant forests and past impressive rock formations. Despite being the 'old road' it is in good condition and very enjoy to ride on a road bike. But this part is also challenging, with inconsistent gradients and some short, steeper sections.
Shortly after passing Las Menas, the route joins up with the main road from Serón and follows that towards the top of the climb. This section is much easier with more gentle and consistent gradients.
Calar Alto is usually open throughout the year. However, snow is possible in the winter and it can get cold at the top in January and February. The heat can also be a problem in July and August, with temperatures in excess of 35°C and very little shade to be found.
