Climb Description
El Yelmo is probably the most iconic and spectacular climb in the Cazorla and Segura mountain range of northern Andalucia. Climbing to nearly 2,000m, with a decent length and average gradient; it would not look out of place in the Alps or Pyrenees. The scenery is picturesque for most of the climb, and becomes really spectacular in the last few kilometres, as you climb to the highest point around - offering wonderful panoramic views. The climb itself is somewhat unusual for the Jaén province of Andalucia, in so far as it is quite steady. The gradients do vary slightly, but usually hover between 6% and 9%, with few stretches in double figures (at least until the ramps of the final kilometer). This makes it a great climb for riders who like to get into a nice rhythm.
El Yelmo can be open throughout the year, depending on weather conditions. However, snow is common in winter, so expect short to medium term closures from December through to March.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is generally in good condition. It is a bit rough in places and with some loose gravel towards the top, but nothing too troublesome for a road bike.
Traffic is very light throughout the climb.
