Climb Description
Peñon de Algamitas is a challenging alternative to the popular Puerto del Zamorano climb, which shares the same road for much of its ascent. The challenge of Peñon de Algamitas comes where it deviates from the main road and climbs to a campsite on the top of a picturesque rock (the 'Peñon'). The gradients reach 20% in the final kilometre and can catch you by surprise having been lulled into a false sense of security by the lower slopes. This is a nice climb with pleasant scenery, typical of the region.
Peñon de Algamitas is open throughout the year.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is good for the first 2km, but gets a bit rougher as the climb progresses. It is still perfectly fine to ride on a road bike though at all times. There is very little traffic on the climb.
