Climb Description
Puerto de Alájar from the San Bartolomée Hermitage is one of our favourite climb in the Huelva province. It is tougher than the average gradient suggests, with several unexpectedly steep picthes in the opening 6km, and is certainly one of the most challenging ascents in the Huelva region. This is also a very remote climb. In fact, you will have to descend it first in order to climb it, unless you have a mountain bike, in which case a circular route is possible. In this region, however, it is well worth the effort, as there are few more enjoyable, scenic and rewarding climbs.
Puerto de Alájar is open throughout the year.
Roads & Traffic
The road is mostly in good condition. It can be slightly rough in places until the village of El Collado, from where it is excellent.
Traffic is very light throughout.
The climb can also be reached from the north, beginning in the village of Fuenteheridos. This is a very short ascent (just 100m of elevation gain), although it does have some gradients up around 10% in places.
