Climb Description
Puerto de la Joya is a short and pleasant climb in the Málaga province of Andalucía. It passes through open countryside, with nice views of the medium mountains that surround Antequera and can be combined with several other climbs in the area. The climb is named after the village of La Joya (the Jewel) near to the top and is ideally situated between Antequera and the city of Málaga, making it a popular choice with cyclists who are in the area to check out the historic sites in the two cities. These include the Dolmenes and Alcazaba in Antequera, and the Roman remains in Málaga, which is one of Spain's oldest settlements.
The climb from Villanueva is most notable for a very challenging 2nd kilometre, where the gradient is inconsistent and briefly rises to a brutal 20%. Apart from that, however, it is a fairly gentle climb, with long downhill sections, allowing you to take in the picturesque olive groves and open scenery of the region.
Puerto de la Joya is open throughout the year.
