Climb Description
This route climbs to Tetica de Bacares from the northern side, and is one of the best high mountains routes in the Almeria Province. It is mostly a steady and picturesque climb, with few steep gradients until you turn off the main road for the final three kilometres. From there, the gradients begin to dip in and out of double figures, with the most challenging section right at the end of the climb. The road finishes at a television tower, from where there are fantastic views in all directions.
If you don't want to climb the steep last three kilometres, you can ignore the turn to Tetica de Bacares, and simply continue along a short plateau to Puerto de Velefique.
Tetica de Bacares is usually open throughout the year. However, snow is possible in the winter and it can get cold at the top in January and February. The heat can also be a problem in July and August, with temperatures in excess of 35°C and very little shade to be found.
Roads & Traffic
The surface is in very good condition for most of the climb. The final kilometre up to the television tower is concrete and is quite rough in places, but still fully rideable on a road bike.
There is very little traffic on the road throughout the climb.
