Climb Description
Valdelinares is quite typical of one of the big climbs situated in the Spanish meseta. It is high altitude, has a good road surface and is enjoyable enough to ride; however, it is lacking something in terms of scenery. This ascent is actually two climbs; first passing over the Puerto de San Rafael, before climbing up to a rather unattractive ski resort above the village of Valdelinares. The climb hosted a stage finish of the 2014 Vuelta a España - won by Colombian rider Winner Ancona. It looked rather unappealing though to spectators, compared with the dramatic and beautiful stages to Lagos de Covadonga and Ancares that provided the most memorable images of the race.
If you are in the area though for some reason, it is one of the better climbs around. The scenery is not awful - just a little uninspiring - and the sheer height and length of the climb makes it enjoyable for riders that love to go uphill!
Valdelinares is open throughout the year. Short term closures are possible in winter, but the road is generally cleared very quickly to allow access to the ski resort.
Roads & Traffic
The road is in very good condition throughout.
There is little traffic throughout the climb during most of the year. In winter the second half of the route can be busy with cars driving up to the ski resort - it is noticeably quieter during the rest of the year.
