Climb Description
Alto de la Tornería is a beautiful climb in the Asturias region. This side begins near the town of Llanes on the Atlantic Coast and climbs into the foothills of the Picos de Europa mountains. The green scenery and fantastic views make it really enjoyable, depsite some steep gradients in the final two kilometres. Alto de la Tornería is, like its neighbour Alto del Torno, one of the many relatively unknown climbs in Asturias, that are absolutely brilliant for cycling. If you are in the area, make sure you climb it!
The area around the climb - in the particular the village of El Mazuco - was also a major center of resistance during the Spanish Civil War. Opponents of the fascist dictator, General Franco, hid out in these mountains under intense pressure. The first known use of carpet bombing took place here in 1937, carried out by the German Condor Legion. But despite a lot of destruction, the Republicans resisted the attack and held onto the important mountain pass for several more months.
Alto de la Tornería is usually open throughout the year.
