Climb Description
Arrate from Eibar is one of the most iconic cycling climb in the Basque Country. However, this is due to the classic ascent from Eibar. The climb from Azitain is short and steep, beginning in an industrial zone before quickly ascending into thick forest. It is a very quiet and tranquil climb, but it lacks the cycling history and views of the climb from Eibar. The poor road surface towards the top of the climb accentuates the challenging gradients and makes this a very tough climb in places. This side has been used a couple of times in recent editions of the Tour of the Basque Country race; once notably as a time trial. However, the race generally still prefers the main way up from Eibar.
Arrate is open throughout the year.
Roads & Traffic
The road is in generally in good condition for the first half. The second half is mixed, with some reasonable asphalted sections and some sections of rough concrete.
There is little traffic throughout the climb.
