Climb Description
Azurki is a nice climb along narrow country lanes, directly to the west of the Pagoeta Natural Park. The climb from Azkoitia is largely pleasant, although most of the ascent is in forests and so there are few spectacular views. The scenery opens up more after reaching the pass at Azkarate and joining the narrow road leading to Azurki.A place of interest near to the start of the climb is the town of Loyola. This was the home town of Ingatius of Loyola. He founded the Jesuits - a powerful counter-reformation movement in Renaissance Europe. The town today is dominated by a large church complex that was built in honour of the martyred St Ignatius.
Azurki is open throughout the year.
Roads & Traffic
The road is in good condition for much of the climb. However, there is a significant stretch, between 3km and 5km where the surface is made from corrugated concrete. This is challenging to climb and is quite bumpy on a road bike.
The first kilometre is on quite a busy road; after turning off that, there is very little traffic for the rest of the climb.
