Climb Description
Bordako Tontorra has shot to fame as a cycling climb in the last few years. Its very steep gradients have seen it be included as the final and decisive climb in recent editions of the San Sebastían Classic race.In 2014 a few riders managed to gain a gap on Bordako Tontorra, before Alejandro Valverde won the race by attacking on the descent into San Sebastían. In 2015 the race turned into something of a farce on the climb. Firstly there was no television coverage due to problems with the aeroplane providing transmission support. Secondly, a motorcycle clipped the wheel of Greg Van Avermaet just as the Belgian rider had launched a potentially decisive attack. Adam Yates ended up winning the classic, taking advantage of hesitation in the chasing group on the descent. Since then, the drama on the climb has been limited to the racing itself!
The first thing to point out regarding Bordako Tontorra is that, in many ways, it is utterly unremarkable. In this part of Guipuzkoa there are hundreds of similar climbs along narrow, steep country lanes. Most do not even have an official name and are certainly not used as classified cycling climbs; however, it is a great part of Spain for riding if you enjoy these sharp and punchy ascents.
The scenery is pleasant but certainly not spectacular. It is largely shrouded in thick forest which limits the views and the climb itself starts from near a large and unattractive motorway. The top of the climb, however, is beautiful as the road connects with Monte Igueldo, providing some excellent views of the Bay of Biscay and a thoroughly enjoyable descent into San Sebastían.
If you are staying in San Sebastían, this is certainly a climb to consider, for its place in recent cycling history more than anything else.
Bordako Tontorra is open throughout the year.
