Climb Description
Herrera is one of the best cycling climbs in the Alava province of the Basque Country. It is quite typical of a Basque climb, with steep gradients over a fairly short distance; however, its summit is one of the highest in the entire region. The climb from Peñacerrada (also known as Urizharra in the Basque language) is the least scenic of the two sides, as much of the upper part of the ascent is in forest. However, it is still pleasant and the lower slopes offer sweeping views of a vibrant green Basque valley. Herrera from this side can be included in a nice circular route with the climb to nearby La Aldea.
Herrera is open throughout the year, but is subject to short term closures in the winter following heavy snowfall.
