Climb Description
The climb to Puerto de Itziar follows the main N-634 road between the coastal towns of Deba and Zumaia. The ascent from Zumaia is little more than a false flat for the most part. The gradients are very gentle, and there are even completely flat and downhill sections. There are no great views on this side of the climb, with the road covered by trees throughout; however, it is a useful climb if you are cycling along the coast and want to avoid the more challenging ascents further inland.
Itziar is also often used as a climb in the Tour of the Basque Country - although for professional riders this is not a significant challenge by any means.
Puerto de Itziar is open throughout the year.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is in very good condition throughout.
Itziar is a main road road and can be busy with traffic at times, particularly during the summer. Lots of cyclists do ride along here, but it is not the most enjoyable stretch of the Basque coast.

Cycling Holidays
Our Basque Country Coast and Bilbao to San Sebastian cycling holidays visit Zumaia, but we avoid the climb to Itziar because of the traffic. If you really want to, it is possible to ride it, but we recommend other options in the area.In the links below you can find out more about these and other tours that we run in the region.
