Climb Description

Jata is a short climb with quite gentle gradients, running parallel to the coast in the Biscay province of the Basque Country. It is not very challenging for regular cyclists, but it is an enjoyable climb to ride. Much of the climb is in forest, but there are occasional viewpoints, and the good road surface and lack of traffic makes it a fun ascent.

Near to Bakio is the popular tourist sight of Gaztelugatxe. However, with many steps, it is not very accessible on a bicycle though and it is also situated on a main road which isn't great for cycling. Combined with the fact that it is quite overcrowded these days, we recommend giving it a miss and heading to nearby Gernika or Lekeitio instead to get a more authentic experience of Basque history.

Jata is open throughout the year.

Roads & Traffic

The road surface is in very good condition.

There is not a lot of traffic on the climb, but some of the roads leading to it can be quite busy.
