Climb Description
Kalbario (also known as Calvario) is a short climb in the Basque Country, linking the towns of Mutriku and Astigarribia. It is an alternative route than taking the busier coastal road to Deba. The climb from Mutriku features very inconsistent gradients which can make it deceptively challenging. The real test comes in the last 500m, where the average gradient is around 10%. The pass is actually reached after 2.1km, with the final 200m of false flat only applicable if you continue to the Kalbario restaurant. Kalbario is often used on the Tour of the Basque Country cycling race, often during the middle of a stage, and breakaways are frequently formed on the steepest parts of the climb. It is a reasonably picturesque climb, although forest generally obscures views of the coast.
Kalbario is open throughout the year.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is in very good condition throughout. The road generally carries little traffic, it is used by a few cars as a short cut through to the town of Mutriku.
