Climb Description
Coll d'Ares is a quiet road cycling climb in the west of the Catalonia region, near to the border with Aragón. It is a challenging climb with fairly steep gradients and is situated in the Montsec Mountains, one of the southern most parts of the Pyrenees chain. The climb from La Clua has numerous sections where the gradient is over 10%, but it rarely gets really steep, so strong cyclists can maintain a nice rhythm. The scenery here is quite nice, particularly when it opens up towards the top of the climb, but it is not as spectacular as the higher mountains further north.
Coll d'Ares often closes for snow during the winter; although it can re-open during milder periods. It is usally open continuously from mid-April to November.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is in very good condition and there is little traffic on the climb.
