Climb Description
The climb to San Bartolomé de Tirajana from Maspalomas is the most popular in all of Gran Canaria. Not only is it easily accessible for riders staying on the south coast, but it also combines beautiful scenery with hairpin bends and at times challenging gradients. The climb is split into two sections, with the first few hundred metres ascending from Maspalomas to the Degollada de las Yeguas viewpoint. From here, the road becomes more narrow and even more winding, as you descend to the small village of Arteara.
The second part of the climb then begins and, aside from one steep kilometre, it is fairly consistent all the way until you reach the town of San Bartolomé. The scenery is very impressive throughout the climb, ranging from desert like at the beginning, to volcanic pine forests near to the top. It is also well worth stopping and looking around San Bartolomé, which has a picturesque old town and charming cobbled streets.
This climb can be combined with several other routes in the area to make a circular ride. In particular we recommend continuing to Pico de las Nieves or Aserrador.
San Bartolomé is open throughout the year.
