Climb Description
Passo di Gavia is an epic cycling climb that has played an important role in the Giro d'Italia. Due to its close proximity to Stelvio and Mortirolo, it can be used to form part of a very hard stage, and also one which is a popular challenge for serious cycle tourists. The climb from Bormio is the easier side of the Gavia. It is long, but has several significant false flat sections and the gradient is only occasionally steepe than 8%. This is also the less scenic of the two sides; although it is far from ugly! In particular, the last 5km are spectacular. The landscape really opens up here with picturesque lakes and peaks providing a memorable back drop.
The Gavia is usually open from June to September.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is in good condition for the most part. Higher up, however, it is quite cracked and some care must be taken.
This is the busier side of the Gavia and there is fairly significant traffic until Santa Caterina. After here, there is still some tourist traffic all the way to the top, although it is not much of an issue.
