Climb Description
Passo di Gavia from Ponte di Legno is a very challenging and truly epic climb. The gradient and altitude combine to trouble even the strongest riders, but the spectacular scenery will help to take your mind off the suffering! This is the classic side of the Gavia and has been used several times in the Giro d'Italia, even though it was not fully paved until the 1990s. The gradient is pretty much unrelenting for the final 14km, with long sections above 10%. Strong riders often combine this climb with the nearby Mortirolo or Stelvio.
As well as being harder and quieter, this is also the more scenic side of the climb. With stunning views along a balcony road for much of the ascent. Make sure you take a light with you though, as there is a very dark 500m long tunnel in the middle of the ascent.
The Gavia is usually open from June to September.
