Climb Description
Passo di Giau is one of the great Giro d'Italia climbs, although it does not have the history of some of the other climbs in the region. Despite first being used in 1973, it was until the late 2000s that the climb started to be used regularly in the race. Now it seems a permanent fixture, with its scenery and difficulty both surpassing that of the parallel Falzarego Pass. This is the slightly less scenic side of the climb, although there are still some stunning views, both leaving Cortina and in the final 2km. The middle part of the climb is mostly in forest and is pleasant rather than spectacular.
Giau is best climbed from May to October.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is in very good condition throughout. The climb can carry quite a bit of traffic - particularly in the first 3km, before the road splits (the other direction going to Passo Falzarego). After here there are still some cars, but it is much less bothersome.
