Climb Description
Passo di Mortirolo is a name that is known by cycling fans throughout the world. The ascent from Edolo is the easier and less heralded side, but it is still a pleasant ascent and can be used to make a tough circular ride including Passo di Gavia. The ascent from this side is largely in forest, although the views open up beautifully in the final few kilometres. The quietness of the road certainly adds to the joy of the climb.
Mortirolo is best climbed from May to October, but can be open longer in some years.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is generally in good condition.
It is reasonably busy for the first few kilometres until the village of Monno (this is the main road from Aprica to Passo del Tonale). After Monno the traffic disappears almost completely.
The tough climb to Monte Padrino also finishes close to the Mortirolo.
