Climb Description
Moncalvillo is the most challenging road cycling climb in the Rioja region. Until Daroca it is very gentle with shallow gradients; however, after turning off towards the communications tower it becomes much steeper. The gradients are unrelenting and the narrow road and trees give it something of a claustrophobic feel. The scenery here is pleasant, particularly on the lower part of the climb as you pass through the vineyards which are so characteristic of the region. Moncalvillo is popular with cyclists from the nearby city of Logroño. It is open throughout the year subject to weather, but short term closures are quite common in winter.
