Climb Description
Puerto de Montenegro is a pleasant climb which finishes on the border between La Rioja and Soria provinces. It is largely gentle, but there are several steep stretches in the final 5km which can come as something of a surprise.Much of the climb follows the Viniegra River and is in forest. The scenery towards the top is more open and affords better views; the road surface here is also much more enjoyable for cycling.
Puerto de Montenegro is open throughout the year subject to weather - short-term closures due to snow are fairly common in winter.
Roads & Traffic
The road is in a poor state on the lower part of the climb. It is asphalted, but is bumpy with frequent pot-holes. After passing through Viniegra de Arriba it improves considerably.
There is little traffic on the climb.
