Climb Description
Puerto de Piqueras is a high mountain pass on the border between the regions of La Rioja and Soria. It is a long and gentle ascent which goes to high altitude, but most of the ascent is in trees so there are few spectacular views. This is an enjoyable climb and one of the best for cycling in the area, but the traffic can be a nuisance at times.Puerto de Piqueras is open from April to November and sometimes longer depending on the weather. In winter it is possible to climb as far as the tunnel 4.5km from the summit.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is in very good condition throughout.
The climb is on the main road through the area and traffic is fairly regular, although not constant and generally not too much of a nuissance. Buses and lorries also use the climb which can be bothersome, particularly if visibility is low. The last part of the climb is quiet, as a tunnel takes the traffic under the pass.
