Climb Description
Puig Major is the highest climb in Mallorca and is situated in the Tramuntana Mountains in the north of the island. However, the climb from Lluc has fairly little elevation gain, as it starts from the Lluc Sanctuary, near to the top of the Coll de Sa Batalla and Coll de Femenia climbs at nearly 500m altitude. Most cyclists will have done one of these two climbs to get to the start of this one.Starting from close to the Lluc sanctuary, this is really a rolling road, rather than a sustained climb, with flat and downhill sections mixed in with gentle climbing. It is a scenic route in the heart of the Tramuntana Mountains, with impressive scenery, including two mountain lakes that you pass close to the pass.
At the top of Puig Major, there is a road that continues further towards the mountain peak itself, but this is now a military base and is not accessible for cyclists.
Puig Major is usually open all year. There is a small chance of snow in January and February which will close access, but this is normally only for a day or two at a time, and does not happen every year. In July and August the heat and traffic makes it less pleasant than during the rest of the year.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is in excellent condition for the entire length of the climb. It is wide and with gentle corners, which also make for a fast descent.
There are some cars on the road, but it is pretty quiet in general, and thre traffic is never near busy enough to really affect the enjoyment of the climb.
