Roads & Traffic
The road is in very good condition throughout on the Spanish side. If you plan to continue over the top into France, be aware that the surface deteriorates considerably. It is still passable on a road bike without problems, but care must be taken on the descent. There is very little traffic on this climb.
Climb Description
Lizarrieta is a short and gentle climb in Navarra, beginning from the sleepy village of Etxalar. It follows a series of hairpins through the forest in the early part of the climb, before breaking out of the trees in the final couple of kilometres. Here there are splendid views across the valley. The lack of traffic, good road surface and pleasant scenery, makes this one of the most enjoyable border crossings to cycle between France and Spain.Lizarrieta is open throughout the year.
Other sides
Lizarrieta can also be climbed from the French side. This is a similar length ascent, but the road surface is significantly worse than on the Spanish side.Nearby Climbs
