Climb Description
San Miguel de Aralar is a popular cycling climb in the Navarra region of Spain - close to the border with the Basque Country. The route heads into the Sierra de Aralar mountains and finishes at a 11th century sanctuary. The climb is largely in forest, with the view only opening up slightly in the final couple of kilometres.San Miguel de Aralar was used as a stage finish in the 2014 Vuelta a España, where Italian Fabio Aru won on the day with a late attack.
The climb is open throughout the year depending on the weather; but be aware that short term closures due to snow are not uncommon in winter.
Roads & Traffic
The surface is fine for cycling on a road bike; although it is concrete rather than asphalt for long sections, and so can be a bit bumpy.
There is very little traffic on this climb.
