Climb Description
This is one of three main routes into the Bernia mountains and, in our opinion, is the worst of the three options. The scenery is pleasant enough, with nice views over the mountains and the coast around Calpe. However, the gradients are not the most enjoyable. Much of the climb is flat or very gentle, but there are a a couple of fairly long sections where the gradient hovers around 16%, peaking at a leg-breaking 22%.
These irregular gradients, combined with the not very good road surface, mean that we would recommend the ascent from Xaló if you want an enjoyable climb. If you want the most challenging route, then the climb on the other side of the mountains from Altea la Vieja is the best choice.
The climb to Bernia is open throughout the whole year.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is not in great condition. It is certainly rideable on a road bike but is often quite bumpy and jarring.
There can be some traffic on the climb, particularly at weekends and in high season, but usually not enough to be bothersome.
