Climb Description
Desierto de las Palmas is one of the most popular cycling climbs in the region, with its proximity to the city of Castellón making it a training ground for many amateur cyclists. The climb has been used several times in the Vuelta a España, most recently in the 2015 edition. The ascent begins from the town of Benicassim - home to one of the biggest music festivals in Europe. It is relatively short and the gradients are consistent, never getting excessively steep. The scenery is pleasant, particularly on the lower slopes where you can catch glimpses of the sea - the upper part of the climb is in trees. At the top of the climb is a small monastery; from here you can turn right to continue climbing to Monte Bartolo - this is a short but very steep extension to the top of the mountain.
Desierto de las Palmas is open throughout the year, and the mild Mediterranean climate makes it an enjoyable climb even in winter.
