Climb Description
Mas de Llopis is a very challenging climb in the Sierra Mariola mountains. It heads most of the way up to the Montcabrer - one of the highest peaks in the region - and it does so in a fairly direct way!The first couple of kilometres from Cocentaina are fairly gentle, but it soon kicks up and the gradient stays well into double figures for a long time. The final 1.5km are also more challenging than the profile suggests due to some irregular sections, tight hairpin bends and a slightly rough road surface.
It is a testing climb, but it is rideable on a road bike and is a scenic road between pine forests. On the way you get views of the Mariola mountains and also of Cocentaina's distinctive castle.
The climb to Mas de Llopis is usually open throughout the whole year.
Roads & Traffic
The road surface is in mixed condition. The first few kilmotres leaving Cocentaina are generally good. It is quite narrow, but mostly smooth, with only a few very short rougher sections.
In the last 1.5km the surface is concrete with a few bits of gravel that have migrated onto the road in places. It is rideable on a road bike, but isn't the smoothest surface.
The final 100m of the climb up to the Mas de Llopis are unpaved and not rideable on a road bike, but it's worth hiking there for the views.
There is very little traffic throughout, and the final 1.5km are closed to motor vehicles.
